ACL tears

The ACL controls rotation of the knee. Tears usually happen with a pivot, cut or awkward landing, often with a pop and fast swelling. Some people do well with rehab alone; others need reconstruction to get back to cutting and pivoting sports.

What it often feels like

  • A pop at injury, followed by swelling within hours
  • The knee giving way when you turn or change direction
  • Difficulty trusting the knee on stairs or uneven ground

Where care usually starts

  • Exam and MRI to check the ACL, meniscus and cartilage
  • Early rehab to calm swelling and restore full straightening of the knee
  • A discussion of your sport, work and goals before any decision

Orthobiologics: when they fit

Orthobiologics don’t heal a fully torn ACL. They may be discussed for related cartilage or tendon problems after the knee has settled.

When surgery is considered

ACL reconstruction is considered for people returning to pivoting sports or with repeated giving way. Timing is planned once motion returns; it isn’t automatic after an injury.
