Forty is not a deadline — it is the point where smart training pays the highest returns. The five areas that matter most.

Something changes around 40, and most people feel it: recovery takes longer, stiffness shows up uninvited, and the body stops forgiving the habits it used to. There is real physiology behind this. Muscle mass declines roughly 3–8% per decade from your 30s onward if unaddressed. Bone density drifts downward. Aerobic capacity falls about 10% per decade.

Here is what the headlines miss: every one of those curves is substantially modifiable. Forty is not a deadline — it is the point where the return on investment from training smart is highest. The person who starts (or restarts) at 45 keeps dramatically more function at 70 than the one who waits.

Our Fitness After 40 framework rests on five areas that compound together.

Purpose and mindset come first. Training for what you love — golf, tennis, paddling, keeping up with grandkids — sustains itself in a way that abstract goals never do.

Safe, progressive exercise is the engine: strength training two to three times weekly, regular aerobic work, and movement quality before load. Start where you are, progress gradually, and respect the difference between discomfort and pain.

Recovery is where adaptation happens: sleep is the master lever, and rest days are part of the program, not a failure of willpower.

Nutrition is the substrate: adequate protein, whole foods, and enough — but not excess — total intake.

Finally, judicious, evidence-based supplementation where a genuine gap exists — guided by testing and need, not marketing.

If you are over 40 and want a plan built around your body and your goals, we would be glad to build it with you.
